Meditation has become more popular in Western cultures over the last few years. It’s known for its uses for self knowledge, spiritual progress and enlightenment, but its stress relieving and health contributions are only now being acknowledged by the medical field. Finding the time to spend fifteen to thirty minutes a day meditating can be challenging in our busy lives. But it’s worth the effort to decide what time of day would most likely allow you to practice without interruptions and then use it to start a meditation routine.
Benefits of Meditation
- By spending this time by ourselves, away from daily demands put on us and the stressors in our lives, we learn to relax and become calmer.
- Better health due to shift of brain activity from right frontal cortex (stressful area) of the brain to the left frontal cortex (calmer area) of the brain, thus leading to improved psychological and physical health.
- Becoming aware of negative thoughts and learning to control our minds, therefore our thoughts.
- Acquire perspective and detachment during the practice of meditation.
- Heal old traumas as well as feelings that lead to depression or anxiety.
- A better understanding of ourselves and who we are.
- Awareness of the world around us and its dualities.
- Stimulates creativity.
No matter if you’re new to meditation or have meditated for years, there are several avenues of getting information for whatever level you’re at from books, classes and the internet. Relaxation music and guided meditation DVD’s are popular choices too.
