Love Finds Her

There was a young woman who felt unattractive despite her slender and petite stature. She remembered all too clearly the hurtful things the children at school said and the names they called her. Her mother always seemed to be angry and would say things that would make her feel bad. She became withdrawn and shy, afraid to say or do anything that would draw the attention of others. She felt so unloved and deeply desired to be loved; yet felt that no one would ever love her. She would dream about finding her knight in shining armor, a man who would truly love her despite her ugliness. He would be attractive, but not overly handsome and would want no one but her.

Relationships were anything but smooth for her. She had few friends and it seemed that every guy that came around her was only interested in touching her where they shouldn’t and would beg for sex. It was plain to her that they didn’t have any interest in getting to know her, her thoughts and feelings. Where was her knight, her true love? She started to give up, believing that love would never be hers.

Then one day she met a young man that made her spirit stir when she sat near him. It was so odd to her that she felt as though she knew him, a sense of familiarity and comfortable feelings. She never felt this way before. But she was so shy, she was afraid to look into his eyes. Instead she would look at him when she was sure he wasn’t looking at her. She liked his appearance, which she considered handsome and she liked his build. He had an aura of gentleness about him and seemed comfortable with who he was. Within days, she knew she was falling in love, but didn’t say anything to him. She couldn’t bear the thought of telling him how she felt, only to have him say that he didn’t have the same feelings for her. So she kept her feelings secret, telling no one. Then his country called him into service. When he told her the news, she was stunned. He told her he had feelings for her and wanted to know if she would wait for him. He didn’t profess love, but did say he felt something for her. For that moment, that was enough and she admitted to him that she had feelings for him too. But she was still afraid to say, “I love you.” He was gone almost as quickly as he had come into her life. She felt such emptiness. They wrote each other every day until one day he called her to tell her that he was being shipped out to the war. She wasn’t all that surprised to hear the news. Then he said, “I love you,” and “When I get back, will you marry me?”
